Quick Answer
If an SMS shows Delivered but the person cannot find it, the phone has most likely filtered it. Google Messages, Samsung Messages, iPhone Messages and apps such as Truecaller can move messages to spam, junk or unknown senders folders after the operator has delivered them. Open that folder and mark the message Not spam. If the report shows Failed, Expired, Rejected or DND, it is a real delivery issue that our support team can check.
Delivered, but not in the inbox: what really happens
When you send an SMS through SMSGatewayHub, it passes through the telecom operator to the customer's handset. The operator then sends back a delivery report (DLR). A status of Delivered means the operator network confirmed that the message reached the handset.
What happens next is decided by the phone itself. The messaging app, and any caller-ID or SMS app the person has installed, can sort the message into the main inbox or into a spam, junk, promotions or unknown senders folder. The operator cannot see this step, so the delivery report cannot show which folder was used.

Why phones put some SMS in spam
Spam filters on phones protect people from fraud, which is a good thing. But they work on patterns, so a genuine message can sometimes look suspicious to them. These are the most common triggers.
Unknown link shorteners
Generic or unfamiliar short links hide where the link goes, which filters treat with caution.
Offer: bit-link.xyz/a8Kq
No brand name in the text
A message that never says who it is from is hard for both people and filters to trust.
Your parcel is waiting. Click now.
ALL CAPS, symbols and emojis
Shouting text, many symbols or a row of emojis look like typical spam patterns.
HURRY!!! LAST CHANCE $$$
"Win, free, urgent" wording
Lottery, prize, free or urgent style language is closely linked to scams.
You WIN a FREE gift. Claim urgently.
Reports and blocks
When many recipients report or block a sender, filters learn to treat that sender as spam.
Wrong route or mixed headers
Promotional content on a transactional or service route, or different headers for the same brand, looks inconsistent.
Large sends to cold lists
Very high volumes to people who never asked for messages tend to attract reports and blocks.
What a trusted SMS looks like
Brand first, clear purpose, a known link and plain language.

Is it a delivery problem or a spam-folder problem?
Before changing anything, find out which of the two it is. This takes a few minutes and saves a lot of guesswork.
Open the delivery report
In the SMSGatewayHub panel, look up the delivery report (DLR) for that mobile number and the time it was sent.
Delivered but not seen?
Ask the person to look in the spam, blocked, junk and unknown senders folders, using the steps below.
Failed, Expired, Rejected or DND?
This is a real delivery issue. Our support team can investigate it using the error code.
Test on other phones
Send the same message to 2-3 different handsets on different networks to see whether one phone is filtering it.
Not delivered vs delivered to spam
| | Not delivered | Delivered to spam folder |
| Delivery report status | Failed / Expired / Rejected / DND | Delivered |
| Where the message is | It never reached the handset | On the handset, in a spam, junk, promotions or unknown senders folder |
| Who decided | The network or the TRAI/DLT checks, for example a template mismatch, a non-whitelisted link, DND, timing rules or a phone that stayed unreachable | The phone's messaging app or an installed caller-ID or SMS app |
| What the user can do | Nothing on the phone; the sender needs to fix the cause | Open the folder and mark the message Not spam |
| What the business should do | Share the message ID and error code with support | Review the message content, header and links using the checklist below |
For help with headers and templates, see DLT registration. You can also test a message against its template with the free DLT template checker.
Move an SMS out of spam on Android
Most Android phones use Google Messages, which has built-in spam protection. Samsung Messages and other makers' apps have their own spam and block filters, so menu names can differ slightly.
Open Spam & blocked
In Google Messages, open the menu and tap Spam & blocked. On Samsung and other phones, open the spam or blocked messages section of the messaging app.
Tap the message
Find the conversation from the business sender and open it.
Choose Not spam
Tap Not spam or Report not spam. The conversation goes back to the main list.
Check spam protection
In Messages settings, review the Spam protection setting so you know whether messages are being filtered automatically.
Find filtered SMS on an iPhone
On iPhone, the Filter Unknown Senders option moves messages from unknown senders to a separate list. In India, iPhone Messages can also sort SMS into categories such as Transactions and Promotions, and SMS filter apps can classify messages as junk.
Open the filter lists
In the Messages app, open the list of filters at the top of the conversation list.
Look in each list
Check Unknown Senders, Transactions, Promotions and Junk. Names can vary with the iOS version and any filter app in use.
Review the setting
Go to Settings > Apps > Messages (on older iOS, Settings > Messages) and check Filter Unknown Senders.
Choose what suits you
Keep filtering on and check the lists when you expect a message, or turn it off to see all messages in one list.
Caller-ID and SMS apps can filter too
Third-party apps
Caller-ID and SMS apps, for example Truecaller, can classify or hide SMS based on their own rules and on reports from their users. If you use one to read messages, check its spam or blocked lists and mark the sender as not spam if the app allows it.
Phone maker apps
Samsung Messages and other manufacturers' apps have their own spam and block filters, separate from Google Messages. A message can be filtered on one phone and reach the inbox on another, which is why testing on a few handsets helps.
Checklist for businesses
How businesses can keep SMS out of spam folders
No sender controls a customer's spam filter, but clear and consistent messages are far less likely to be filtered. Use this list for every template.
- Use a header (sender ID) that clearly matches your brand.
- Put your brand name at the start of the message.
- Use links on your own or whitelisted domain, or SMSGatewayHub short links on the sg0.co domain.
- Keep OTP and transactional messages purely informational, with no offers.
- Send promotions only to customers who opted in.
- Honour opt-outs quickly and remove those numbers.
- Keep the message text consistent with the approved DLT template.
- Avoid ALL CAPS, many symbols or emojis and "win, free, urgent" wording.
- Use one consistent header per brand and purpose.
- Ask customers to mark your messages Not spam; this teaches their phone's filter.
The India rules that also affect delivery
Spam folders are a phone-side decision, but in India some messages are stopped before they ever reach the phone. These rules come from TRAI's Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations (TCCCPR) and are enforced through DLT.
Know these before you send
- DLT registration: the sender (entity), headers (sender IDs) and message templates must be registered on DLT. Our team helps with DLT registration.
- Promotional SMS: goes only to non-DND numbers and only in the allowed time window. Our platform rejects promotional SMS sent between 9 PM and 10 AM.
- TRAI's URL whitelisting rule: since 1 October 2024, URLs, APK and OTT links in SMS must be whitelisted, so messages with non-whitelisted links are blocked.
- Right route for the content: OTPs and alerts belong on transactional SMS routes; offers belong on bulk promotional SMS. See also our OTP SMS service.
Still not found? Send these details to our support team
SMSGatewayHub support reviews delivery reports and error codes for the numbers you share. The more of these details you include, the faster we can tell you exactly what happened.
- Message ID or campaign ID from the panel or API response
- Mobile numbers with the date and time of sending
- Sender ID (header) used for the message
- DLT template ID of the message
- Screenshots showing where the message landed, or that it is missing
- Handset and messaging app, for example the phone model and Google Messages, Samsung Messages, iPhone Messages or a filter app
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did my SMS go to the spam folder?
The messaging app on the phone, or a caller-ID or SMS app installed on it, decided the message looked like spam and moved it to a spam, junk or unknown senders folder. This happens on the handset after the operator has delivered the message, so the delivery report can still show Delivered.
The delivery report says Delivered but the customer cannot see the SMS. What does that mean?
Delivered means the operator network confirmed that the message reached the handset. The operator cannot see which folder the phone's app put it in, so the first step is to check the spam, blocked, junk and unknown senders folders on that phone.
How do I move an SMS out of spam on Android?
In Google Messages, open the menu, go to Spam & blocked, tap the conversation and choose Not spam or Report not spam. On Samsung and other phones, check the spam or blocked messages section of the messaging app, because each maker has its own filter.
Where do SMS from businesses go on an iPhone?
If Filter Unknown Senders is turned on, messages from unknown senders go to a separate list. In India, iPhone Messages can also sort SMS into categories such as Transactions and Promotions, and an SMS filter app can classify messages as junk. Check these lists in the Messages app.
Does marking a message as Not spam help?
Yes. It moves the message back to the conversation list and teaches the phone's filter that the user wants messages from that sender. It is the quickest fix a user can make, and businesses can politely ask customers to do it.
Can links in an SMS cause problems?
Yes. Under TRAI's URL whitelisting rule, in force since 1 October 2024, SMS with URLs, APK or OTT links that are not whitelisted are blocked. Generic or unknown link shorteners can also make phone filters treat a message as spam, so use your own whitelisted domain or SMSGatewayHub short links on sg0.co.
Can SMSGatewayHub stop my SMS from ever going to spam?
No sender or provider controls the spam filter on a customer's phone. We help you send messages that look trustworthy, with a clear brand header, DLT-matched templates, whitelisted or sg0.co links and the right route, and our support team reviews delivery reports and error codes for any number you share.
Should I use WhatsApp or RCS for important messages?
For critical flows it is worth considering WhatsApp Business API or RCS, because both show a verified, branded sender. You can use them alongside SMS rather than replacing it.
