What is the WhatsApp Calling API?

The WhatsApp Calling API adds voice calls to your WhatsApp Business number on the official WhatsApp Business Platform. Customers can call your business from the chat for free, and you can call customers who have given you permission. Calls are answered by your agents in the SMSGatewayHub team inbox, or routed to your own PBX, IVR or contact centre over SIP.

Two kinds of calls

User-initiated and business-initiated calls

WhatsApp separates calls that your customer starts from calls that your business starts. The rules and the cost are different.

Business-initiated calls

Needs permissionCharged per minute

Your business calls the customer on WhatsApp. First you ask for permission with a call permission request message; the customer can allow calls for 7 days or permanently. These calls are billed per started minute at your plan's per-minute rate, deducted from your WhatsApp wallet.

India and eligibility

Who can use WhatsApp calling

  • Available in India for both customer-initiated and business-initiated calls. (WhatsApp does not offer business-initiated calls in a few countries, such as the United States, Canada, Egypt, Vietnam and Nigeria.)
  • Official WhatsApp Business API number: the number must be on the WhatsApp Business Platform (Cloud API), not on the WhatsApp Business app.
  • Messaging limit of 2,000 or more: WhatsApp switches calling on only for numbers that can message at least 2,000 unique customers a day.

Not sure about your messaging limit? The panel shows the live limit and quality of every number, and our team helps you grow it.

Pricing basics

What WhatsApp calls cost

Call or messageCost
Customer calls your business (user-initiated)Free
Your business calls a customer (business-initiated)Billed per started minute at your plan's per-minute rate, deducted from your WhatsApp wallet; only connected call time counts
Call permission request messageCharged like a normal WhatsApp message
SIP connection to your own PBXIncluded in selected plans (Premium and Lifetime)

See current rates on the WhatsApp pricing page. A call from or to a customer also opens or refreshes the 24-hour customer service window for messages.

How customers reach you

Three ways to start a WhatsApp call

Call icon in the chat

When calling is on, a call icon appears in your WhatsApp chat header. You can hide it, or show it only to customers in chosen countries.

Call button in a message

Send a message with a "Call on WhatsApp" button, for example after a support chat, so the customer can call with one tap.

Call link on your website

A WhatsApp call link (wa.me/call/ followed by your number) opens a call on a phone. Add it with our free WhatsApp widget generator. Call links do not work in WhatsApp on computers.

Limits

WhatsApp calling limits to know

WhatsApp sets these limits for each pair of business number and customer, to protect customers from unwanted calls. We check them before anything is sent.

RuleLimit
Call permission requests to one customer1 per 24 hours and 2 per 7 days
Temporary permission7 days from the customer's "allow"
Permanent permissionUntil the customer takes it back
Connected business-initiated calls to one customerUp to 100 every 24 hours
Unanswered business-initiated callsAfter 2 in a row the customer is asked to review the permission; after 4 in a row it is removed
Bring your own PBX

Route WhatsApp calls to your PBX over SIP

Already run a call centre, IVR or PBX such as Asterisk or FreeSWITCH? Connect it once and WhatsApp calls arrive there like any other SIP call, with your existing IVR menus, queues and recording.

  • Secure signalling over TLS and encrypted media (SRTP with DTLS or SDES)
  • Digest authentication with a password created by WhatsApp
  • Optional request URI parameters, for example a trunk group
  • Call started and call ended events kept in your call log
Use cases

What businesses use WhatsApp calling for

Customer support

Move from chat to a voice call when typing is not enough, with the chat history in front of the agent.

Sales and enquiries

Let website and ad visitors call your sales team on WhatsApp instead of filling a form.

Delivery and service visits

Call customers who allowed it to confirm an address or a visit time, from your verified business number.

Healthcare and education

Patients and parents call the clinic or school on WhatsApp during the hours you set.

Banks and fintech

Call back customers who asked for help, on a number they can see is your business.

Contact centres

Add WhatsApp as a voice channel to your existing IVR and agent queues through SIP.

Developer API

Calling API for developers

Use the same WhatsApp API key (sghwa_...) as for messages. Base URL: https://www.smsgatewayhub.com/cpaas/whatsapp/calls.ashx

RequestWhat it does
GET ?action=logsCall log with filters: from, to (yyyy-MM-dd), number, direction (user_initiated or business_initiated), status, page
POST ?action=request-permissionSends a call permission request to a customer (to, optional body, ref) inside the 24-hour window
GET ?action=permission&to=Whether a customer allows your calls, until when, and the request and call limits left
GET / POST ?action=settingsCalling on or off, call icon, call-back permission prompt and business hours, with WhatsApp's own field names
POST ?action=webhook{"callEvents": true} sends call events to your WhatsApp webhook, signed like message events

Placing or answering the call itself is not offered through the REST API: the voice stream needs a browser or a SIP server. Answer in the panel inbox, or connect your PBX over SIP.

Ask a customer for call permission
curl -X POST "https://www.smsgatewayhub.com/cpaas/whatsapp/calls.ashx?action=request-permission" \

Help

How to set up WhatsApp calling

1. Switch calling on

  1. Log in to the panel and open WhatsApp > Calls.
  2. Choose the WhatsApp number. It must be registered on the WhatsApp Business API with a messaging limit of 2,000 or more.
  3. Switch Calling on and click Save. The call icon then shows in your chat on customers' phones.
  4. Optional: hide the call icon, show it only in chosen countries, or switch the "ask to allow call-backs" prompt on or off.

2. Answer calls in the inbox

  1. Open WhatsApp > Inbox in a desktop browser (Chrome, Edge or Firefox) and allow the microphone when asked.
  2. When a customer calls, the chat shows the incoming call with Accept and Reject buttons.
  3. Accept to talk; the call, its duration and the agent are saved in the chat and the call log.
  4. Keep the inbox open during business hours. Calls that nobody answers are logged as missed.

3. Set business hours

  1. In WhatsApp > Calls, switch Call hours on and choose your time zone (Asia/Kolkata for India).
  2. Add your open and close times for each day, in 24-hour format. Up to 2 time ranges per day are allowed.
  3. Add holidays as dates with start and end times. Dates in the past are not accepted.
  4. Calls are put through only during these hours, so nobody calls an empty office.

4. Call customers (permission requests)

  1. Open the customer's chat. Inside 24 hours of their last message, send a call permission request; outside that window use an approved template with a call permission button.
  2. The customer chooses to allow calls for 7 days, allow always, or decline. You see the answer in the chat.
  3. Once allowed, the call button in the chat lets an agent call the customer. Connected calls are billed per started minute at your plan's per-minute rate, deducted from your WhatsApp wallet.
  4. Limits: 1 request per 24 hours and 2 per 7 days to the same customer, and up to 100 connected calls a day.

5. Connect your own PBX over SIP

  1. Prepare your SIP server: a public host name, TLS on port 5061 (or the port you choose) with a valid certificate, and digest authentication. WhatsApp connects to it from its own servers; allow them in your firewall.
  2. In WhatsApp > Calls > SIP, enter the host name and port, optional request URI parameters (for example a trunk group), and the media key exchange (DTLS by default, or SDES).
  3. Tick the confirmation and click Save. While SIP is on, calls ring on your PBX instead of the panel inbox.
  4. Click Get SIP password. Enter the user name (your business number) and this password in your PBX. It is shown once; click again to read it from WhatsApp.
  5. Click Test settings to read back what WhatsApp has saved, then make a test call from a phone. To go back to the inbox, untick SIP and click Save.

SIP is available on selected plans (Premium and Lifetime). Your PBX must support the Opus codec; G.711 (PCMA / PCMU) can also be switched on.
